This pattern is similar to the traditional granny square but with a simple twist that creates a lacy look. It can be made with any color and any weight yarn making it extremely versatile. This pattern is also available as a free Ravelry download. (updated 2021)
Supplies:
TLC Baby Yarn-Lime Solid (2 skeins) and Laddie Print (2 skeins)
Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
Finished Size:
Approximately 32”x32” if using suggested yarn and hook.
Gauge:
Gauge is not important for this project and will vary based on the yarn weight and size hook chosen.
Terminology:
beg- beginning
ch- chain
dc- double crochet
rep- repeat
RS- right side
sl st- slip stitch
sp- space
t-ch- turn chain
Notes/Special Stitches:
V (V-stitch)- dc, ch 1, dc
Hold 2 strands together throughout. This pattern is worked in turned rows.
Instructions:
With Laddie Print, Ch 5.
Rnd 1– Dc in 5th ch from the hook (makes first V). *Ch 2, V, rep from * 2 more times in same ch. Ch 2. Join with sl st to 3rd ch from beg ch. Mark as RS.
Rnd 2– Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch). Turn work. (dc, ch 2, V) in ch 2 sp. Ch 1. *(V, ch 2, V) in next ch 2 sp. Corner made. Ch 1, rep from * 2 more times. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of t-ch.
Rnd 3– Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch). Turn work. Dc in same ch 1 sp as join. Ch 1. *(V, ch 2, V) in corner. Ch 1, V in ch 1 sp between the V-stitches, ch 1. Rep from * 2 more times. (V, ch 2, V) in next ch 2 sp, ch 1. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of t-ch.
Rnd 4– Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch). Turn work. Dc in same ch 1 sp as join. *Ch 1. (V, ch 2, V) in corner, (ch 1, V in next ch 1 sp) 2 times. Rep from * 2 more times. Ch 1, (V, ch 2, V) in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, V in next ch 1 sp, ch 1. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of t-ch.
Change to Lime Solid.
Rnd 5– Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch). Turn work. Dc in same ch 1 sp as join. Ch 1, ♦*(V in next ch 1 sp, ch 1), rep from * until next corner is reached. (V, ch 2, V) in corner, ch 1, rep from ♦ to last corner. (V in next ch 1 sp, ch 1) to end of round. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of t-ch.
Continue repeating Row 5, in the following color sequence:
Rnd 5-8– Lime Solid
Rnd 9-14– Laddie Print
Rnd 15-19– Lime Solid
Rnd 20-24–Laddie Print
Rnd 25-27– Lime Solid
Fasten off and weave in ends. Block as desired.
*You may continue to add rounds, taking care to put corners into ch-2 spaces and V-stitches in ch-1 spaces.
